Reflection : Psalms 8

O Lord, our sovereign Master, how magnificent is your reputation throughout the earth! You reveal your majesty in the heavens above! When children and nursing babies cry for help, you protect them from your foes, so that you might put an end to the vindictive enemy. When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made, and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place, I think, "Of what importance is the human race, that you should notice them? Of what importance is mankind, that you should pay attention to them, and make them almost like the heavenly beings?" You grant mankind honor and majesty; you allow them to rule over your creation; you have placed everything under their authority, including all the sheep and cattle, as well as the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea and everything that moves through the channels of the seas. O Lord, our sovereign Master, how magnificent is your reputation throughout the earth! (NET Bible : Psalms 8)

Ya TUHAN, Allah kami, kuasa-Mu termasyhur di seluruh bumi! Keagungan-Mu yang mengatasi langit dinyanyikan oleh anak-anak dan bayi. PemerintahanMu teguh tak tergoyahkan untuk membungkamkan musuh dan lawan. Bila kupandang langit yang Kauciptakan, bulan dan bintang-bintang yang Kaupasang, apakah manusia itu, sehingga Kau ingat dia, siapakah dia, sehingga Kaupelihara? Tetapi Kau angkat dia hampir setara dengan Allah, kaumahkotai dia dengan keagungan dan kehormatan. Kau beri dia kuasa atas alam raya, seluruh ciptaan-Mu Kau tundukkan kepadanya: domba, sapi dan ternak semuanya, juga binatang di padang belantara; burung-burung dan ikan-ikan, semua makhluk di dalam lautan. Ya TUHAN, Tuhan kami, keagunganMu termasyhur di seluruh bumi! (BIS : Mazmur 8)

Keagungan Tuhan menyinar dari kejadiaanNya di bumi dan di syurga. KeagunganNya menunjukkan kemenangan dalam pembebasan umatNya, penghakimanNya, rukunNya serta pemerintahanNya atas segala ciptaanNya. Segala ciptaanNya menunjukkan kekuasaan dan kemuliaan Tuhan.

Manusia pada zahirnya berdosa dan jauh dari kemuliaan Tuhan. Akibatnya manusia kehilangan dominasi yang diberikan oleh Tuhan. Tetapi dominasi ini diberikan balik kepada manusia oleh Yesus Kristus. Bukan manusia tetapi dalam Kristuslah dominasi kepunyaanNya. Yesus Kristus mati di tempat kita mengalahkan kuasa maut. Ini terjadi bila kita datang pada Tuhan dan percaya apa yang Dia lakukan untuk kita.

Bersyukurlah pada Tuhan kita apa yang dilakukanNya.

The majesty of our Lord radiates from His work on the earth and heaven. Majestic ("addir, mighty") denotes His victory in redemption, judgement, His law and His rule over the creation. All creation shows the power and the glory of God.

Mankind by his depravity has lost dominion over what God has given us. But this is restored in Jesus Christ. It is in Him rather than in us that the dominion is exhibited. Christ died in our place and defeated death. All this is possible when we come in faith of what God has done for us.

Praise be to our God for what He has done!
